UNESCO 17 May - World Information Society Day
17 May - World Information Society Day
World Information Society Day is celebrated each year on 17 May to remind the world of the vision of the World Summit on the Information Society to build “a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented information society” based on fundamental human rights.
UNESCO refers to these societies as Knowledge Societies based on four fundamental principles: freedom of expression, universal access to information and knowledge, respect for cultural and linguistic diversity, equal access to quality education. This year, UNESCO dedicates the Day to the principle of universal access to information and knowledge.
